Libya hold Super Eagles hostage at Al Abaq Airport
The Nigerian national team the Super Eagles is in dire situation in Libya as they have been held hostage at the Al Abaq Airport in Al Abag, Libya,
The Super Eagles and the entire Nigerian delegation to the AFCON 2025 qualifiers had journeyed to the North African country for the second leg of their AFCON qualifier clash after beating the Libyan team on “our home soil.”
The Nigeria Football Federation officials who cried out for international intervention said their aircraft was first diverted from the original destination of Benghazi where the match will be played to a place which is more than two hours’ drive to the match venue.
The NFF Media informed journalists late on Sunday night, “About an hour to landing, the Nigerian aircraft approaching its destination, Benghazi, was diverted to another city more than two hour drive from the original destination.”
The team left Uyo Sunday morning and made a brief stop in Kano. They initially planned on flying to Tripoli before a two-hour road trip to Benghazi, the location of the match.
However, they changed flight plans and decided to fly straight to Benghazi to avoid the physical toll a road trip would take on the players ahead of the match on Tuesday.
The Libyans already threatened to “deal with the Super Eagles” on their way back home after losing the first leg match 1-0 in Uyo.
