Walid Jibrin, chairman, Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has resigned.
Jibrin held the position for six years after taking over from Haliru Bello who was removed in 2016.
According to TheCable, Jibrin had already briefed senior members of the party on his decision to quit.
A source close to the former BoT chairman told the medium: “He said it is in the best interest of the party since there are complaints of regional lop-sidedness.”
Jibrin’s resignation comes on the heels of the crisis rocking Nigeria’s main opposition party.
Crisis engulfed the PDP after Atiku Abubakar became the party’s standard bearer and purportedly overlooked Rivers State governor Nyesom Wike who was preferred by majority of the NWC members.
The former vice-president won the presidential primary poll after Aminu Tambuwal, governor of Sokoto, dramatically pulled out of the exercise and backed him.
Despite the preference of Wike for the position of the party’s vice-presidential candidate, Abubakar chose Ifeanyi Okowa, governor of Delta.
There had been attempts to mend the relationship between Wike and Atiku with both men meeting twice over the past few months. These attempts are yet to yield fruits going by the reports emanating from both their camps lately.
