The Delta State Government has launched an investigation into the Tuesday attacked on officials of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission by youth in Ughelli area of the state.
Some suspected Internet fraudsters aka Yahoo Boys, were said to have recruited some Ughelli youths to protest against the arrest of few persons in the area. The protests later turned bloody and led to the death of three youths, while over 12 trucks burnt.
The Delta State Commissioner for Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu, said state government had started a probe into the incident.
He said, “The EFCC is a creation of law and can operate anywhere in the country, but such must be done within the law.
“The state government has ordered an investigation into the issue, to determine whether the EFCC or the youths acted within the law or not.”
The state Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Bright Edafe, on Thursday said 16 suspects have been arrested.
He said, “During the attack on EFCC officers, 12 trucks were burnt down by the youths. One person was shot dead according to the Divisionsl Police Officer. We have arrested 16 suspects and investigation is ongoing”
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Ughelli North Local Government Area, Mr Godwin Adode, has declared 6pm to 6am curfew in the Ughelli.
The chairman appealed to residents to remain calm, assuring them that the security agencies were o ground to bring normalcy back to the town.
