Divorced Jigawa woman falls into depression, sets herself on fire

The police command in Jigawa says a 40-year-old woman has set herself ablaze because her husband divorced her.

In a statement on Friday, the police spokesperson in for the Jigawa State Police Command, Lawan   Shiisu, said,  the incident occurred in Garin Mallam village in the  Guri Local Governmrnt Area of the state.

Shiisu said the woman poured petrol over her body and set herself ablaze on August 22.

The statement read, “On Thursday around 0740hrs, the command received a heart-breaking and pitiful news of an incident from Guri that indicated that a 40-year-old woman at Garin Mallam village poured petrol on her body, set herself ablaze, and got burnt beyond recognition.

“Following this report, a squad of officers from the Guri divisional police headquarters raced to the scene and verified the incident.

“The officers took the charred body to the hospital and later released the corpse to the family for burial.”

The police spokesperson said a preliminary investigation conducted revealed that the woman suffered depression fosome months after the husband divorced her.

He added that the state Commissioner of Police, Ahmadu Abdullahi, urged residents to always seek guidance and counsel from elders on complex matters to prevent such tragic incidents.
