Doctors suspend strike, threaten another one from April 21

Ebun Emmanuel – April 7, 2026
The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has suspended its indefinite nationwide strike and directed members to resume duties from 8am on Wednesday.
NARD President, Mohammad Usman Suleiman, said the decision followed a National Executive Council meeting and assurances from the Federal Government regarding the continued implementation of the Professional Allowance Table (PAT).
He disclosed that the association has given the government until April 21 to meet its demands, warning that failure to do so would trigger another industrial action.
The doctors had embarked on strike over plans by the government to halt the implementation of the revised PAT, which includes improved allowances for call duty, shifts, rural postings, and non-clinical duties.
NARD accused the government of breaching earlier agreements reached after the 2025 strike and demanded the immediate payment of outstanding entitlements, promotion arrears, and salaries owed in some centres.
The association also called for the prompt release of the 2026 medical residency training fund, stressing that compliance with these demands would determine whether the suspension of the strike would hold.
