Explosion at Mobil filling station injures two, burns six cars, others in Lagos
An explosion from a 12-ton gas truck on Thursday led to a fire incident at the Mobil filling station Awolowo Road, opposite Airport, near Allen Junction, Ikeja Lagos.
It was gathered that the incident caused the burning of vehicles inside the filling station and gut a nearby building.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Authority spokesman, Miss Okunbor, said investigations by the Agency revealed that incident occurred to the 8-ton LPG gas cylinder truck while gas was being dispensed to customers, causing the gas to escape rapidly, before bursting into flames.
He said, “In response to distress calls received by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, through the 767/112 Toll-Free Emergency lines at 11.08am, the Agency activated it’s Tiger Response Team from the Command and Control Centre, Alausa, Ikeja.
“Upon arrival of the Tiger Team at the incident scene, it was observed that the Mobil filling station at the location was engulfed in flames.
” Six commercial and private vehicles were impacted.
“The second floor of a two storey building beside the gas station was also affected.
“There were no fatalities as a result of the incidence.
“Two adult males suffered severe burns, while others sustained minor injuries. The injured individuals were rescued and given immediate medical attention by the Agency’s Pre-Hospital Care Team in collaboration with LASAMBUS before being transferred to LASUTH for further medical treatment.
“The fire has been extinguished and all safety precautions have been implemented to secure the two LPG gas cylinder trucks, (weighing 12 and 8 tons respectively), from any further incidents.
“The Agency’s LRT, along with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, NEMA, LASBCA, LNSC, FRSC, LASAMBUS, and the Nigerian Police Force, are involved in further response and investigations.
“All primary responders at the incident scene are working together to clear the scene and quickly return normalcy to the environment.”
Okunbor further stated that LASEMA Response Team, LASEMA Pre-Hospital Care Unit, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, NEMA and officials of the Nigerian Police Force were on ground to save the day.
