I make N40,000 daily from errant Lagos drivers

A man who has been arrested for impersonating as official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority,  David Oluchkwu, has confessed that he makes N40,000 from motorists that violate traffic laws in the state.
 Oluchkwu was arrested on Wednesday for posing as LASTMA and extorting money from drivers across the state.
Oluchkwu, an indegene of ‘Ukpu’ in Anambra State said, “Any motorists I caught driving against traffic (one-way) pay a minimum of N50,000 while other traffic violators are charged with different fines In all I make average of N40,000 daily.”
A press statement by the Director, Public Affairs Department, LASTMA, Adebayo Taofiq, said the General Manager of the traffic agency, Bolaji Oreagba, confirmed that the suspect was nabbed by a patrol team while on duty around the Lekki.
“Priliminary investigations conducted by the agency revealed that the arrested suspect belonged to a criminal gang and they have been extorting huge sum of money from innocent motorists apprehended for various traffic offences ranging from seat-belt, obstructions, illegal overtaking and One-way at different locations across the state.
“According to Mr. Oreagba, the suspect was apprehended after ‘our patrol team sighted him fully kitted with a LASTMA uniform collecting money from commercial bus drivers who were illegally dropping and picking passengers under the Lekki bridge.'”
Oreagba urged  motorists to be wary of fake officers demanding money from them, stating that the agency was operating a cashless policy “as any violators apprehended are charged to court with a ‘Referral Notice’.”
Meanwhile, the Director, Legal Department Akerele Kehinde, said the suspect would be charged to court.
