Igbo Activist, Ijele leads counter-protest in Abuja opposing Nnamdi Kanu’s release

Ebun Emmanuel – October 20, 2025
A counter-protest against the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), took place in Abuja on Monday.
The demonstration was led by Chukwuka Ofoegbu, popularly known as Ijele, an Igbo activist and former associate of Kanu.
The protest occurred amidst heightened tensions in the capital, where multiple groups have been rallying for Kanu’s release.
Ijele, who has publicly distanced himself from Kanu’s secessionist agenda, expressed concerns over the potential implications of Kanu’s release on national unity and security.
He emphasised the need for justice for victims of violence attributed to IPOB activities and called for a balanced approach to addressing the issue.
The demonstration was peaceful, with participants holding placards and chanting slogans advocating for justice and national cohesion.
Security forces maintained a visible presence to ensure public order.
