William Samoei Ruto has officially been sworn in as President of Kenya following his swearing-in ceremony, which took place at the Karasani Stadium, Kenya.

Amid cheers from the excited crowd, Ruto publicly declared the oath of allegiance and appended his signature to the corresponding documents, Punch reports.

With his inauguration, Ruto becomes the fifth president of Independent Kenya, and the second ethnic Kalenjin after the late Daniel Arap Moi to hold the office.

Outgoing President Uhuru Kenyatta handed over the symbols of power – a sword and a copy of Kenya’s constitution – to Ruto, who was his deputy during his two terms in office.

Kenyatta backed defeated candidate Odinga in the election, saying Ruto was unworthy to serve as president.

It led to a massive fallout between the two men, and Kenyatta congratulated Ruto on his win only a day before his inauguration.

Kenyatta said he was committed to a peaceful transition and urged the new president to serve all Kenyans.

Meanwhile, Raila Odinga had said he would not be present as he had “serious concerns” about his opponent’s victory.
