Kaduna PDP rejects bye-election results, cites vote buying, intimidation

The Kaduna State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected the outcome of the August 16 bye-elections held in Basawa, Zaria Kewaye, and Chikun/Kajuru constituencies.
It accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of undermining the process.
In a statement by its chairman, Sir Edward Masha, the PDP alleged that the elections were marred by intimidation, vote buying, and what it described as “gestapo and commando tactics” deployed by the state government and its agents.
Masha claimed that the party’s candidate and members of the campaign committee in Chikun/Kajuru were abducted, while funds meant for logistics and allowances for agents were seized.
“These acts were carried out in full public glare, showcasing the APC’s shameless disregard for democracy,” the statement read.
The PDP said the alleged irregularities and the reported low voter turnout were proof of growing distrust in the electoral process, which it linked to Governor Uba Sani’s failure to conduct the 2024 local government elections in the state.
“We therefore reject the outcome of the elections in all three constituencies and will be meeting with our candidates, stakeholders, and legal team to determine our next course of action,” the party stated.
While expressing appreciation to voters and party stakeholders for their support, the PDP warned that the trend of voter apathy could reach a “dangerous peak” by 2027 if not addressed.
It urged Kaduna residents to continue supporting the party, assuring them that ongoing internal reforms would guarantee stronger structures and better representation.
