The Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has sympathised with traders over the tragic fire incident that engulfed some shops at the popular Kantin Kwari textile market on Saturday.

In a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Tofa, Yusuf extended his sympathies to the traders that were affected, their families, and the entire community of Kano State.

He described the incident as a devastating blow to the state’s economic hub and shared in the grief of those who suffered losses.

The Governor urged traders and market authorities to remain vigilant and strengthen safety measures to prevent future occurrences.

The fire, which started around 7pm, began at Gidan Inuwa Mai Mai on Bayajidda Street and quickly spread to several buildings within the market.

“Thanks to the rapid intervention of the Federal Fire Service, Kano State Fire Service, and additional reinforcements from Sabon Gari, Dawanau, and Singa Markets, the fire was successfully contained, preventing further destruction,” the statement said.

This is just as the traders said only six shops were completely razed during the night fire.

The chairman of the Market Traders Association, Balarabe Tatari, who confirmed the number of affected shops on Sunday, said there were however some shops that were affected by smoke during the incident..

“Only six shops were completely destroyed during the Saturday night fire at the Market but there were some shops that were affected by smoke and the wares inside have been removed.

“We are trying to assess the damage or losses,” he said.
