Lagos, Kano police warn fearless October 1 protesters against violent demonstration
The Lagos and Kano State Police Commands have warned those planning protests ahead of the 64th Nigerian Independence day on Tuesday to do so within the confines of the law.
The Commissioners of Police in charge of the Lagos State Police Command, CP Ishola Olanrewaju, stated that any form of disturbance or breach of public order would not be toler
Ishola told residents at a recent stakeholders’ meeting that protesters are expected to carry out their activities peacefully, with respect for the rights of other citizens.
At the gathering comprising student bodies, security agencies, DSS, labour leaders, traditional rulers, national Union of road transport workers, Nigerian Bar association, among others Ishola emphasized that the core objective of the meeting was to ensure the safety and security of all stakeholders in October 1.
He said, “The Lagos State Police Command is fully committed to maintaining law and order, as well as safeguarding the rights of citizens to freely express themselves in line with the law.
“The Lagos State Police Command, in conjunction with other security agencies, is fully prepared to provide the highest level of security for all activities slated for October 1st.”
Also in Kano State, the police warned protesters against causing mayhem on streets as the command would deal decisively with any person or group of persons that break law.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna, gave the warning while parading some arrested criminals at the Command’s headquarters Bompai Kano on Monday.
He said that the police would not allow a repeat of the violence witnessed in the state during the recent EndBadGovernance protests.
He said, “On the forthcoming Independence Day celebration on 1 October 2024, the state police command has concluded all necessary arrangements to provide adequate security during and after the event period.
“I therefore urge all Kano State residents to cooperate with the police as well as other security agencies and participate in the Independence Day celebration responsibly, adhering to all safety guidelines and respecting the rights of others.
“Security deployments have been concluded at strategic locations within the state to forestall any likely security threats from the planned 1st of October nationwide protesters,” Abdullahi said.
