LASU announces new date for commencement of second semester examination

The Lagos State University (LASU), has announced a new date for the commencement of the second semester examinations for the 2024/2025 academic session.
The institution announced Monday, August 18, 2025 as the start day of the exams.
The announcement follows the suspension of the strike by the university’s staff unions, which disrupted academic activities.
On August 2, LASU Senate had suspended the 2024/2025 second-semester examinations, earlier scheduled to commence on August 4.
The Joint Action Committee, comprising the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), had reached the decision to call off the industrial action during a congress held on Monday on the university premises.
Before Monday’s resolution, LASU workers had turned down the Lagos State Government’s proposal regarding their outstanding entitlements.
Last Thursday, representatives of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) and the university management met with Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat at his office, where both parties signed an agreement.
The five-hour meeting resulted in a deal for the government to settle 12 months of the 23-month arrears from the 25 per cent and 35 per cent salary increments owed to staff.
Under the arrangement, the state government will pay nine months’ worth, while the LASU management will cover the remaining three months. Payments are scheduled to be made in instalments between August and December 2025.
However, at an emergency congress the following day, many staff members rejected the deal, insisting on the full payment of the 23-month arrears in five instalments in August 2025.
Some workers had accused JAC leaders of signing what they described as an “insufficient” agreement without first securing congressional approval.
Hours later, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello issued an appeal, urging staff to return to work, which the unions accepted.
The Senate of the university at a meeting held on Monday approved the resumption of academic and social activities in the university, effective Wednesday.
A statement by the Coordinator, Centre for Information and Public Relations, LASU, Thomas-Onashile Oluwayemisi, on Monday evening asked students to move into their hostels on all the university campuses in Ojo, Ikeja and Epe from Wednesday.
The Senate also approved that the 2024/2025 Second Semester Examinations, previously suspended, should commence on Monday, August 18, 2025.
The statement read, “The Senate of Lagos State University, at its meeting held on Monday, 11th August 2025, approved the resumption of academic and social activities in the University with effect from Wednesday, 13th August 2025.
“This follows the decision of the Joint Action Committee to call off its industrial action on Tuesday, 12th August 2025, and resume work on Wednesday, 13th August 2025, after a productive meeting with the Deputy Governor, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, on Thursday, 7th August 2025.
“After due consideration of the updates received from the Vice-Chancellor on the said meeting, Senate resolved that, all academic and social activities should resume across the University on Wednesday, 13th August 2025.
“Students should move into their hostels on all University campuses in Ojo, Ikeja and Epe from Wednesday, 13th August 2025. The 2024/2025 Second Semester Examinations, previously suspended, should commence on Monday, 18th August 2025.”
