Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva have been buried after a service in Portugal on Saturday morning.

A funeral took place for the Liverpool striker and his younger sibling at Igreja Matriz de Gondomar (the Mother Church of Gondomar) at 10am and was attended by a large contingent from the club, including Captain Virgil van Dijk.

Andy Roberson, Darwin Nunez, Alexis Mac Allister, Joe Gomez and Conor Bradley were also present alongside Ryan Gravenberch, Cody Gakpo and head coach Arne Slot. Sporting director Richard Hughes and CEO of football Michael Edwards were in attendance.

His Portuguese national teammates include Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva,  Ruben Dias, Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes, Al Hilal’s Joao Cancelo and Ruben Neves.

Jota, 28, and his brother, Silva, 25, died near Zamora in north western Spain on Thursday after the Lamborghini they were driving crashed on an isolated stretch of highway just after midnight and burst into flames.

The brothers were reportedly heading to catch a boat from northern Spain to go to England, where Jota was to re-join Liverpool after a summer break.

Jota’s death occurred two weeks after he married long-time partner Rute Cardoso while on holiday from a long season where he helped Liverpool win the Premier League.

The couple had three children, the youngest born last year, 2024.
