Meranda resigns as Lagos Assembly speaker, re-elected as deputy speaker as Obasa presides as Speaker

Mrs Mojisola Meranda has resigned as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
“This is a notice of resignation as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly,” Meranda read her resignation letter out at a special plenary on Monday.
Meranda assumed office on January 13, 2025, following the removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who has been reinstated.
Despite her brief tenure, lawmakers lauded her ability to lead effectively and foster a positive atmosphere in the Assembly.

She was later re-elected as the Deputy Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Meranda, who resigned earlier as Speaker of the House, accepted the role of the deputy speaker pledging to serve the state in good faith.
The House later nominated Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker.
Obasa was returned as the speaker as Lagos State House of Assembly.
Noheem Adams of Eti Osa Constituency 1 nominated Obasa.
Obasa on Monday, March 3 subsequently presided over the assembly plenary.
He also adjourned the plenary sine die.
In his speech, Obasa said: “I thank Meranda who has been supportive and loyal as Deputy Speaker.
“I also thank all the lawmakers for their loyalty.
“I want to thank our elders, Bisi Akande, Olusegun Osoba, GAC members, Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Obafemi Hamzat and other party leaders for their support.”
