The Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress have resolved to ground activities nationwide from October 3, 2023.

The Presidents of the NLC and TUC, Joe Ajaero and Festus Osifo, made the position of the unions known on Tuesday.

Ajaero and Osifo spoke after the National Executive Councils of the two unions met separately in Abuja on Tuesday.

According to the communique read by the two presidents, the indefinite strike was as a result of the alleged insensitivity of government to the plights of Nigerians as a result of the removal of petrol subsidy and continuous demonstration of unwillingness and complete lack of initiative.

They advised Nigerians to stock food items as the strike will be total and indefinite.

The Labour Unions explained that the strike was necessitated by the failure of government to successfully implement policies to alleviate the sufferings of Nigerians following the removal of the subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit.

The 21-day ultimatum given by the NLC ended last week. Joe Ajaero had complained that “none of the demands put before the Federal Government had been addressed.”

The union first observed a two-day nationwide warning strike on September 5 and 6 to show its readiness for the indefinite strike.
