The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, on Tuesday, broke his silence over the alleged rift involving him and Governor Seyi Makinde and the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, saying his relationship with them is cordial.

Speaking with journalists in his private residence at Boroboro in Oyo town, Oba Owoade insisted that there was no misunderstanding whatsoever between him and the governor, saying that if they arise, they would be addressed privately.

He said, “I have nothing against the government. The governor has been very nice. If there is anything, I will meet him one-on-one, and we will talk about it.

“There is no form of misunderstanding anyway. I have a good relationship with my governor. I have been indisposed for some time now. That is why I have been absent at state functions recently, but if there is a function, I will attend.”

The monarch also debunked rumours of strained relations with Olubadan, insisting that both traditional rulers maintain mutual respect and understanding.

“My relationship with the Olubadan is cordial. Some people use online bloggers to join the popular bandwagon. There is no misunderstanding.

“They create discord where none exists between just anyone and me. They attach meanings and issues to almost anything and everything,” he said.

On the alleged snub by Olubadan, Alaafin said, “I extended my hand to him, but he later explained that he did not see it. I don’t see it as an offence.

“After that incident, he called me, and we later met again at Aso Rock during an iftar. There is no misunderstanding between us.

“People have had to ask him, too, and he told them there was no issue between us. In fact, he picked up his phone to call me, and we spoke. There’s no issue whatsoever between us.

“We have mutual respect for each other. People peddling rumours about me; it is because of the throne. Bloggers create problems where there are none. It is part of the job.”

The monarch also said he harbours no grievances against any individual or institution, saying, “I have nothing against anybody.”

He also expressed appreciation to members of the media for their consistent support of the palace, describing journalists as partners in progress.

He disclosed that preparations were underway for his upcoming birthday on July 18, during which some deserving individuals would be conferred with chieftaincy titles.

Recounting his experience on the throne in the last year, the monarch highlighted ongoing developmental efforts, noting that a committee had been established to address land disputes, while plans were in motion to construct a civic centre.

He added that renovation works were also ongoing at the palace as part of efforts to preserve its heritage and improve its infrastructure.

The monarch reiterated his commitment to peace, unity, and development, urging the public to disregard unfounded rumours and support traditional institutions.

“The journey so far has been mixed, but we thank God that He has been faithful and supportive.

“In my one year in office, there are several initiatives I am implementing. So far, we have handled over 200 cases of land disputes, and to address these, I have established a Land Dispute Committee, which includes some chiefs and dignitaries.

“Oyo needs tangible development, and we have commenced construction of a community health centre, which is expected to be commissioned in July.

“The facility is valued at approximately N800m. We are also working towards establishing a civic centre, in addition to the ongoing renovation of the palace,” Oba Owoade said.
