Over 100 Kano prison inmates beg governor for clemency

About 100 inmates on death row in Kano Correctional Centres have begged the Kano State Government and the State Committee on Propagative of Mercy for clemency.

A statement on Thursday by the spokesman of the state command of the Nigerian Correctional Centre, Musbahu Mata, said the inmates made their wishes known during the visit of the Chairman, Hajiya Azumi Bebeji, and members of the Kano State Prerogative of Mercy Committee to the Maximum Security Custodial Centre, Janguzu, Kano

The spokesman added that the Controller of the Kano State command, Suleiman Inuwa, had already presented the list of inmates who have formally applied for clemency to the committee during the visit.

He noted that the chairperson received the list of inmates on Death Row, those serving life imprisonment as well as those serving long sentences.

“The list also includes inmates with serious medical challenges, elderly inmates and other classes of inmates,” he added.

He said the chairperson assured the inmates that the government would look into their conditions based on the attestation of good conduct and industry while in custody to be made by the Correctional Service.

“The state government will look into these requests based on the attestation of good conduct and industry while in custody. The attention of Governor Abba Yusuf will be called to the list,” she said.

Bebeji expressed delight about inmates who memorized the Holy Quran as well as the brilliance of some inmates who got nine credits in the National Examination Council and NBIS and are seeking admission into the National Open University of Nigeria.

She called on all inmates to obey the rules of the custodial centre and be productive to themselves and the society.

The controller appreciated the chairperson for shouldering the Iftar feeding Programme in the facility, adding that Service was happy with the positive result in decongesting the Custodial Centres.
