Oyo govt, police gang up against father of slain WASSCE candidate, call him serial offender

Odunayo Alade, father of a Senior Secondary School 1 student who was shot dead in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, Kehinde Alade, has been described as a serial traffic offender.
The Oyo State Traffic Management Authority and Oyo State Police Command made the allegation at a joint briefing with the Oyo State Government on Thursday.
The two law enforcement agencies said he had fled, adding that his absence is delaying the completion of investigation and its report.
Kehinde was shot by a policeman on Tuesday in the Alakia area of Ibadan when being conveyed to school by his father who drove against traffic and tried escaping from traffic enforcers.
Speaking at the joint news conference in Ibadan, the Commissioner, Oyo State Police Command, CP Johnson Adenola, disclosed that the investigation was almost completed and assured that justice would be done.
He said that the officer who shot Kehinde to death was in custody and his statement had been obtained.
According to him, an interim report on the matter is ready, but the statement of Alade has not been obtained to conclude the investigation.
The Commissioner of Police said it was important to get the statement of the deceased’s father for a conclusive investigation into the incident.
He said, “It is a monumental and regrettable loss and we feel for the family. We will give the father an opportunity for him to provide his defence. He is the only factor delaying the completion of the investigation.
“We have also gotten the statement of an eyewitness who was inside the car with him (father) and I assure that justice will be done on the matter.”
Adenola said the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olukayode Egbetokun, had directed that a thorough investigation should be conducted “and I assure that nothing would be left undone to ensure justice”.
Also speaking, the Oyo State Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, said there exists collaboration between the Oyo State Government and the Police Command in the state.
Oyelade assured the public that the police officer responsible for the death of the deceased would be brought to justice.
He said the Oyo State Government led by Governor Seyi Makinde stood for justice and would do everything possible to ensure justice was done in respect of the death of Kehinde.
The Executive Chairman of OYRTMA, Major Adesagba Adekoya (retd), said the death of Kehinde was highly regrettable.
He added that the Oyo State Traffic Management Authority required the partnership of the police in enforcement of traffic law in the state due to reckless drivers on the road.
He said that the partnership had not just started, citing an incident when a road traffic offender brought out a gun to attack his personnel and the backup of the police was quickly sought to bring the situation under control.
He said, “This year alone, about eight of our personnel have been assaulted with serious injuries.
“People are always very aggressive to our personnel.”
Adekoya, who sympathised with the father of the deceased, further described him as a serial offender, noting that he was earlier arrested on May 14, 2025 for not parking in a designated park and fined N15,000
Recalled that Kehinde was hit by a stray bullet on Tuesday at Alakia area of Ibadan when his father was allegedly attempting to evade arrest.
Contrary to Alade’s claim when he spoke with newsmen before disappearing that he was hit by the vehicles of the enforcement team, he was seen in a video doing the opposite.
He first ran into one of the enforcers’ vehicles, damaged the front bumper of his car, and then hit by a towing van in the enforcement convoy before the vehicle at the rear had to make way for him as he made to barge into it.
The video also showed Kehinde struggling for life while his father fought the policemen that ostensibly fired the bullet.
