The Peoples Democratic Party has downplayed reports of looming defections by some of its governors, insisting the opposition party remains stable and people-driven despite political manoeuvres ahead of its national convention.

Speaking at a media parley in Abuja on Thursday, PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, described the rumours as “engineered distractions” allegedly sponsored by the All Progressives Congress.

Ologunagba stressed that the PDP’s resilience lay in its democratic culture and institutional strength.

“Let me say this: the stories of defection or possible defection that are catching Nigerians’ attention show that we have a political master.

“Because of the foundation of the PDP that is strong, solid and based on the people, we remain the only truly democratic party in this country, one built on ideas, convictions, and policies,” Ologunagba noted.

He reminded Nigerians that in the past, even presidents and vice-presidents had exited the PDP, yet the party endured.

“It’s on record that vice presidents and presidents have left this party before, but the PDP remains. That’s the message to Nigerians; that this is an institution built on ideals rooted in the people,” he added.

The remarks come amid waves of defections from the PDP to the APC in recent months.

In April, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his predecessor Ifeanyi Okowa, and other PDP stakeholders in the state joined the APC.

Similar shifts have taken place in Jigawa, where large blocs of PDP and NNPP supporters recently defected to the ruling party as political alignments gather pace ahead of the 2027 general elections.
