A ValueJet aircraft carrying Nigeria’s Super Eagles from South Africa made an Emergency landing in Angola after a crack was detected in one of the plane’s windows.

A top official of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) who was among the team’s contingent confirmed the incident to News360, describing it as “a close call that could have been worse.”

The aircraft has departed South Africa en route to Uyo, Akwa Ibom State in Nigeria where the team was to play a World Cup qualifying match.

But the pilot was said to have detected the fault mid air and diverted to Angola for an emergency landing for safety of everyone in the plane.

The Super Eagles are currently in a tight race for qualification from Group C of the FIFA World Cup African qualifiers after Friday’s round of matches left Benin Republic, South Africa, and Nigeria all still in contention.

With one match day left, Benin Republic is leading the group with 17 points followed by South Africa with 15 points and Nigeria with 14 points.

In Durban, Bafana Bafana of  South Africa were held to a goalless draw by Zimbabwe.

They must defeat Rwanda to stay in contention.

However, the Nigeria’s team secured a 2-1 win over Lesotho to keep their World Cup dream alive.

If they win in their last match on Tuesday and South After loses or secure a draw, Nigeria will qualify behind Benin for the 2026 World Cup.
