Police arrest Obi of Lagos over plan to launch N1.5bn palace

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested one Chibuike Azubike, 65 years, who is claiming to be the “Obi of Lagos”.
He was arrested alongside some of his allies – Chief Chibuzor Ani, 57; Chief Martins Nwaodika, 65, and Mr Ikechukwu Franklin Nnadi, 41.
The men were arrested for allegedly planning to inaugurate N1.5 billion palace in Amuwo Odofin, on September 13.
Spokesman for the command, DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi, in a statement said the suspects were apprehended in Ikeja following intelligence that the group intended to hold an unlawful installation ceremony.
The police said officers shut the venue to forestall any breach of peace and protect unsuspecting members of the public.
Security operatives were deployed in the area to ensure that the event did not hold and that order was maintained in the area.
The police stated that the suspects would remain in custody while investigations continued.
“They will be charged to court at the conclusion of the probe,” the statement added.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Olohundare Jimoh, warned residents to be wary of impostors attempting to exploit cultural and traditional institutions.
He reiterates that such action is unlawful, contrary to the statute of Lagos State, and capable of breaching the peace of society.
