The National Police Council on Monday confirmed Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police, formally.

The unanimous ratification makes Disu the Nigeria’s 23rd police chief.

The council, chaired by President Bola Tinubu and attended by state governors, endorsed Disu’s appointment at its meeting held at the State House, Abuja.

Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, said the Council confirmed Disu’s appointment after approximately 40-minutes.

Tinubu had earlier appointed Disu as acting Inspector-General of Police on February 24, following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun.

The meeting complied with the Police Act 2020, which mandates the Police Council’s input on the IGP appointment.

Those who attended the meeting also include Vice President Kashim Shettima, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, Head of Civil Service, Didi Walson-Jack, and Governors of Enugu, Nasarawa, Ogun, Kwara, Plateau, Ondo and Lagos.

The Deputy Governor of Kogi State also attended alongside the Ministers of the Federal Capital Territory, Police Affairs and Interior.

Disu, 59, has been serving in an acting capacity since his appointment by Tinubu.
