Ex-Lagos Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, who was impeached on January 13, 2025, has got back security details withdrawn from him after his sacking by lawmakers

This is as sources said he is set to return to his position. The details of the new Speaker, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, have been withdrawn.

Recall that Meranda previously served as Obasa’s deputy, and was unanimously elected as Speaker following Obasa’s impeachment, making history as the first female to hold the position in Lagos.

However, despite not officially resigning, her tenure appears to be coming to an end following interventions by top leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Over the weekend, a high-level meeting was convened by key APC figures, including former National Chairman Chief Bisi Akande, former Osun State Governor Chief Olusegun Osoba, ex-Commissioner for Justice Dr. Muiz Banire, members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), and lawmakers. During the meeting, a resolution was reportedly reached stating that Obasa’s removal was illegal and that the Assembly should reinstate him.

While it remains unclear when the House will reconvene to make the change official, signs indicate that Obasa’s return is imminent.

Police operatives and security details assigned to Speaker Meranda and the Lagos State House of Assembly have been withdrawn with immediate effect.

The Senior Special Assistant to Meranda on Media, Ganzallo Victor, has raised concerns over the development, warning that both the Speaker and the Assembly are now vulnerable.

The impeached speaker Obasa, was said to have visited the assembly complex on Thursday.

The ousted speaker arrived at the assembly complex around midday and made for the speaker’s office.
