School principals suspended over death of student in Ogun

The Ogun State Government has suspended the principals of Ilugun High School, Abeokuta (junior and senior sections).

The government said the move is to enable sanity in the school pending investigations into the violent protest that erupted after the death of an alleged student linked to the school.

The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Abayomi Arigbabu, said preliminary investigations revealed a disturbing twist, noting that the deceased boy identified by different names including Babalola Ayomide, Salako Jimoh, and Afolabi Babalola could not be confirmed as a bona fide student of the school.

“None of these names appear in the official state education database, the OGSERA platform, which authenticates all school enrolments,” the commissioner stated.

He further alleged that the Principal of Ilugun High School (Junior) had been implicated in the collection of illegal fees, a matter now under investigation.

While extending condolences to the family of the deceased, the commissioner reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to providing free education to every school-age child, regardless of background.

He also appealed to students not to destroy school property in anger, warning that such actions would worsen the situation rather than resolve it.

The state government said investigations will be thorough and decisive, with appropriate actions taken to restore discipline and accountability in the school system.
