Senate backs Reps, passes bill to okay ‘Nigeria we hail thee’
The Senate on Tuesday passed the National Anthem Bill 2024 to revert to the old national anthem, “Nigeria, we hail thee”.
This came after considering a report by Tahir Monguno, chairman of the judiciary committee.
Monguno said his committee disagreed with the position of Lateef Fagbemi, Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), that the process to change the anthem should be subjected to a wider process.
The bill subsequently went through Senate’s scrutiny clause-by-clause.
The Red chamber thereafter passed the bill.
The bill now awaits President Bola Tinubu’s assent to become law.
The House of Representatives had on Thursday passed the bill.
Some lawmakers in both chambers of the National Assembly spoke in favour of the bill.
