About seven persons were killed after some gunmen opened fire on Senator Ifeanyi Ubah’s convoy at Enugwu-Ukwu community in the Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The Anambra South Senator was said to be om his way from a wedding at Onitsha on Saturday and heading for Enugwu Ukwu to participate in a new yam festival organised by “Igwe Mkpume” scheduled for Sunday when the attack occurred.
According to several sources, the gunmen rained bullets on the convoy, and killed seven, including media aides and police officers who engaged them.
Senator Ubah was reportedly shielded by his bulletproof SUV, during the attack.
Iyke Orji, a social media user who claimed to have link to the senator said, “Sen Ifeanyi Ubah was attacked in Enugwu Ukwu by hired killers. It was a calculated attempt. It wasn’t an impromptu stuff.
“Information was gathered about the time of movement and take-off. The policemen were about four in numbers and they were attacked.
“All their arms were collected. The men that participated in the attack were about nine in numbers.”
But another source said six policemen were killed in the attack.
Anambra State police spokesman, DSP Toochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that there was an attack on men of the command at Enugwu-Ukwu, but he gave no casualty figure.
He said: “Yes, there was an attack at Enugwu-Ukwu today, but the casualty figure is not clear. As I speak to you, the Commissioner of Police has personally led a team of policemen to the scene, and normalcy has been restored.
“Though the details of the incident are still sketchy, operatives are on ground there as operation is going on and the situation is being monitored.”
