Super TV boss’ murder: Defendant rejects Lagos public defender

One of the defendants facing trial for the murder of the Chief Executive Officer of Super TV, Usifo Ataga, at the Lagos High Court, Ikoyi, Chioma Egbuchu, has rejected the services of the state Office of the Public Defender.

Recall that the University of Lagos undergraduate, Chidinma Ojukwu, was accused of killing Ataga; Egbuchu is the third defendant in the trial.

The UNILAG undergraduate is standing trial bothering on murder, stealing and forgery alongside her sister, Egbuchu, and one Adedapo Quadri.

At the resumed hearing of the trial on Thursday, the counsel for Egbuchu, one Mrs, J. I. Osaigede, told the court that the OPD would no longer represent Egbuchu.

The new counsel, Ngozi Akandu, who announced his appearance for the third defendant, however, informed the court that he was just briefed about the case on Wednesday, adding he needed time to go through the case file.

The prosecution counsel, Deputy Director of Public Prosecution, Mrs Adenike Oluwafemi, said the defendant was free to get any counsel of her choice.

Also, Chidinma’s counsel, Mr Onwuka Egwu, did not object to the third defendant’s application.

Justice Yetunde Adesanya adjourned till May 16, 2022.
