Tinubu ends campaign rallies in Lagos, promises to prioritise wellbeing of Nigerians
The nationwide presidential campaign rallies of All Progressives Congress ended on Tuesday in Lagos State, where the party’s presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu was once a governor.
Unprecedented crowd besieged the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere venue of the rally from as early as 8 am.
Both President Muhammadu Buhari and Tinubu flew in from Abuja to Lagos and moved to Surulere where residents and party supporters were waiting with various shades of campaign banners, dancing and chanting APC slogans.
Tinubu was received by the tumultuous crowd of residents, and rode in a large motorcade from the airport through the city. The crowd grew stronger as the political procession moved from Ikeja to Oshodi, Mushin and Ojuelegba.
The physical presence of President Muhammadu Buhari sent a message of reassurance to the crowd of party supporters that thronged the rally ground.
The campaign’s grand finale was attended by all APC governors, Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, House of Representatives Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, APC National Chairman, Sen. Abdullahi Adamu, members of Lagos State Executive Council, party leaders in Lagos and other states in the South-West.
Buhari lifted up Asíwájú Tinubu’s hand, again proclaiming him the next president of the country.
Addressing the rally, Tinubu said he would work hard for Nigeria.
He added, “All the plans set out in our Action Plan for Renewed Hope for Nigerians will be pursued rigorously.”
He thanked Buhari for standing firm for democracy, accountability, transparency and fairness.
“The president asked all of us interested to go and contest the primaries of our party. After I was picked overwhelmingly by the delegates, he didn’t ask them to change the results because of my tribe or religion or because I’m not from Daura like him, he accepted me and celebrated with me, telling me ‘you are almost there now’.”
Tinubu also said when it was time for the choice of a running mate, the president turned down his offer to choose for him, telling him “you know better, you are very experienced and you know the kind of person who will assist you to run the country, so pick that person’.
Tinubu promised to do all in his power to continue where Buhari would stop, and consolidate on his achievements.
The APC presidential candidate pledge to deploy his physical and mental energy to work out his vision for Nigeria and renew the citizens’ hope.
He said, “I am coming to give Nigerians renewed hope, because there is hope in the country.
“I will sustain that hope by prioritising your wellbeing at all times. Those who are feeling helpless today will have their expectations revalidated. All the agenda set out in our manifesto will be pursued vigorously with all our energy.”
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu thanked the people of the state for turning out in large numbers to receive Buhari and Tinubu.
He said with the massive turn out, they had shown their love for the ‘City Boy,’ asking them to go further on Saturday February 25, 2023 to vote Asíwájú for president.
Those who addressed the rally included Adamu, Director-General of the Tinubu-Shettima Campaign and Plateau State, Governor Simon Lalong and the wife of the APC candidate, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
