The Lagos State Government has explained why popular actress Sarah Martins was arrested by the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC).

The state government said he was conducting cooking activities on public infrastructure without authorization

Recall that Sarah Martins, founder of the Golden Heart Foundation, was cooking free meals for homeless and vulnerable people on the median of Admiralty Way, Lekki Phase 1.

According to eyewitnesses, Martins had set up cooking pots and was preparing Jollof rice and other meals to distribute when KAI officers approached and arrested her.

The officers seized her cooking equipment and other supplies, citing violations of Lagos State’s environmental sanitation and public hygiene regulations.

However, the government in a statement on Friday by Tokunbo Wahab, Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, claimed that the charitable cooking initiative violated state environmental and sanitation laws.

“The Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources wishes to clarify an incident in the Admiralty area of Lekki Phase 1, where an individual was apprehended by LAGESC officials for engaging in unauthorised activities on public infrastructure.

“The person involved claimed to be conducting charitable cooking on a road median, which contravenes existing regulations.

“While the government appreciates residents’ philanthropic efforts, such activities must comply with state laws to ensure public safety, environmental protection, and urban order.”
