Workers shut down LASU as unions declare ‘total indefinite strike’
The staff unions of the Lagos State University, Ojo, have declared strike action and shut down the higher institution following the “failure” of the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu-led administration to implement agreement reached between the unions and a committee set up by the government.
In a letter dated December 6, 2024, sent to the institutions’ Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, the unions accused the government of being unresponsive and insensitive to the welfare of LASU workers.
While they commended the VC for her efforts to prevent the strike, the unions said the Lagos State Government “has for long taken our members for granted.”
The letter reads, “In consonance with the decision of the Joint Action Committee of the Lagos State University Staff Unions in its letter to the Governor, dated 19th November 2024, in which we reiterated that if the state Government failed to accede to our demand with regard to the implementation of the reports of the committees put in place by the government by the 6th of December 2024, we hereby notify you and the management of the university that all staff unions have declared a total indefinite strike action effective from 6th, December, 2024, after the day’s close of work.
“Much as we appreciate your efforts in solving this matter amicably, we note that government has for long taken our members for granted as they seem not to be responsive and sensitive to the welfare of our members. We thank you for your king gesture and support always.
“Thank you madam.”
The letter was signed by Prof. Ibrahim A. Bakare, Chairman ASUU-LASU; Comrade Oluwaseyi Lawal, Chairman, SSANU-LASU; Dr Olujimi Adejo, Chairman NAAT-LASU; and Comrade Obafemi Sanni, Chairman, NASU-LASU.
