The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has said it will not allow illegitimate funds in the the 2023 General Elections.
The Chairman of the EFCC, Abdulrasheed Bawa, stated this on Tuesday in Lagos at the ‘EFCC Workshop on Financial Crimes Reporting.’
Bawa, who spoke via Zoom from outside the shores of the country, insisted that Nigeria deserved the right leaders to move the country forward and not those who would want to buy votes through illegitimate funds.
He said, “Illegitimate funds will not find its way into 2023 elections. We must ensure that we elect the right leaders. The problems of Nigeria can only be solved by Nigerians.
“I urge Nigerians to report if they notice any movement of Illegitimate funds.”
The EFCC chair added that the commission was looking at a number of politicians in respect to illegitimate funds, saying that there were also international collaboration to this.
Bawa also expressed his excitement at the creation of the Special Control Unit Against Money Laundering, SCUML, saying such would add bite to the fight against corruption.
He said, “Now we get to interview accountants, property managers, lawyers and others on who owns what and so on. If there are no avenue to launder proceeds of crime, corruption will reduce.”
Earlier in a goodwill message delivered on his behalf at the venue of the conference, Bawa  said the workshop was an evidence of the importance which the EFCC attaches to the media as a partner in the fight against economic and financial crimes.
He said, “The role of the media in projecting the work of the EFCC over the last 19 years is remarkable. It is only fitting that we reciprocate by seeking to further expand your capacity to deliver this onerous national duty in expanding the space of transparency and accountability in our public life.
“Even with all the milestones recorded by the Commission since inception, EFCC has never been under the illusion that it could fight and win the war on corruption without the support of other stakeholders. As the fourth Estate of the realm, the media has a constitutional responsibility to fight corruption and other forms of economic and financial crimes.”
