Car rams into truck in Delta, three die, many sustain injuries

No fewer than three persons have been confirmed dead in a multiple accident in the Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State.

A number of persons were also injured in the accident that involved a Volkswagen Golf, a truck and one other vehicle along the East West Road on Sunday.

It was learnt that both tipper and Volkswagen Golf were coming from the same direction.

An eyewitness said, “Due to the traffic, the Golf driver tried to beat the traffic by going against the traffic. Suddenly, the driver saw an upcoming vehicle; it was in the process of trying to avoid the vehicle that the driver swerved to its normal lane and the car hit the truck.

“I was coming from Evwreni side when I saw the hold-up; I came down and then I saw the accident. Some of the victims were shouting for help, I was able to take one of them to dropped my passenger and rescued only one person to Calvary Hospital.

“The truck was coming from Ughelli to Bayelsa while the car was coming from Ughelli to Uwherun, both were coming on the same lane.

“The second side of the road was blocked and they were using one lane, maybe he wanted to overtake the tipper but when he saw another car coming, he now hit the tipper” he said.

The Ughelli Unit Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Ikechukwu Okwo, said three persons died while one was injured.

He said, “The three persons were taken to the Ugheli General Hospital where the doctor confirmed them dead. One of the victims was rescued alive and then taken to the hospital.”

Okwo said speed violation aided the accident, pointing out that speeding was one of the common causes of auto crashes.
