The senator representing Enugu east, Chimaroke Nnamani, has lost his bid to seek re-election to the upper legislative chamber.

Announcing the result on Sunday, INEC returning officer, Joachim Omeje, said Kelvin Chukwu, the candidate of the Labour Party, secured 69,136 votes to win the election.

Nnamani, who contested on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party came second with 48,701 votes while Adaku Ogbu of the All Progressives Congress came a distant third with 8,548 votes.

Kelvin is the brother to Oyibo Chukwu, who was the LP candidate for the senatorial district until his death days before the election was initially scheduled to hold in February.

Oyibo was killed on February 22, alongside some of his supporters, in Amechi Awkunanaw in Enugu south LGA of Enugu when gunmen opened fire on his convoy.

Meanwhile, the PDP had expelled Nnamani on February 10 over alleged anti-party activities.

The senator, who had sued the PDP over the expulsion, had publicly supported the president-elect, Bola Tinubu, who is a member of the All Progressives Congress.
