Council of State asks CBN to produce new naira, recirculate old notes

Members of the Nigerian Council of State have asked the Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele to make new naira notes available or recirculate old naira notes in order to alleviate Nigerians’ suffering.

This was one of the outcome of the council meeting held in Abuja on Friday at the Presidential Villa and presided by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Attorney-General of the Federation Abubakar Malami, who briefed Journalists after the Council’s meeting in Abuja says members expressed support for the CBN’s naira redesign policy.

He added, “The Council, however, asked CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele to make new naira notes available or recirculate old naira notes in order to alleviate Nigerians’ suffering.”

The State Council of State also fault the Implementation of the policy.

At the meeting were former Presidents Yakubu Gowon, Abdusalami Abubakar and Goodluck Jonathan, as well as Olusegun Obasanjo, who attended the meeting virtually.

Also present at the meeting were Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Senate President Ahmad Lawan and Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila.

Gpovernors in attendance were Nasir El-Rufai (Kaduna), Darius Ishaku (Taraba) Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos) and Babagana Zulum (Borno)
