Health authorities in Cross River State have identified and isolated 10 persons following contact with a foreign national who recently tested positive for Covid-19.

The state epidemiologist, Dr Inyang Ekpenyong, disclosed that the individuals were traced during ongoing surveillance efforts after the index case was confirmed.

According to her, the affected persons have been placed under restricted movement in their homes to prevent further spread of the virus.

“We’ve restricted their movements to their homes, so that they do not spread the symptoms to other persons,” she said.

Ekpenyong added that the infected foreign national is currently receiving treatment at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital and is responding positively.

Health officials had earlier visited the individual’s workplace in Akamkpa Local Government Area as part of intensified contact tracing measures.

The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Henry Egbe Ayuk, reassured residents that the situation is under control, noting that all necessary public health protocols have been activated.

“COVID-19 is not peculiar to Nigeria. But we’re determined to contain it. There’s no cause for alarm,” he said.

Authorities also reminded the public that the virus, first detected years ago, has not been completely eradicated globally, urging continued adherence to preventive measures such as hand hygiene, use of face masks, and general safety precautions.
