Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s re-election ambition suffered fresh uncertainty on Sunday after the Rivers State governor abruptly walked out of the All Progressives Congress screening exercise in Abuja.
Fubara arrived at the Plateau Governor’s Lodge, venue of the APC screening, at about 3pm after missing the earlier session attended by other incumbent governors seeking return tickets ahead of the 2027 elections.
However, the Rivers governor spent barely 20 minutes inside the screening room before exiting with a visibly tense expression.
The governor declined to speak with journalists who had waited several hours at the venue for his arrival.
When asked about the outcome of the exercise, Fubara tersely responded: “No comment.”
Observers at the venue noted that unlike other governors screened by the committee, Fubara was not escorted out by members of the panel — a development that immediately fuelled speculation over possible disagreement during the exercise.
Sources at the venue disclosed that committee members only left the room minutes after the governor had departed.
The screening session was chaired by APC Deputy National Chairman (North), Ali Dalori.
Fubara’s appearance comes amid an intensifying political feud between him and his former political ally, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
The rivalry between both leaders has continued to shape political calculations in Rivers State, with reports suggesting that forces loyal to Wike are backing alternative aspirants for the APC governorship ticket.
