LTV, EKO FM, Traffic Radio staff down tools Monday over Lagos’ failure to pay minimum wage
Staff of Lagos Television (LTV), Radio Lagos/EKO FM, and Lagos Traffic Radio will embark on an indefinite strike from Monday following the state government’s failure to implement the new minimum wage, despite months of advocacy for a salary increase.
A joint strike action, organized by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers’ Union (RATTAWU), is scheduled to commence on January 13th, to compel the government to meet the lingering demands of workers.
According to a formal notification sent to union members and the state government, the impending strike will officially begin on the Lagos Television premises, encompassing all NUJ and RATTAWU members employed at Lagos Television, Radio Lagos/EKO FM, and Lagos Traffic Radio.
The unions are demanding that the government take immediate action to address the pressing issues that they claim have been pending for several months.
In a letter jointly signed by the NUJ Lagos State Council Chairman, Adeleye Ajayi, and the Secretary, Tunde Olalere, on Thursday, the union expressed its support for the strike.
The union noted that the revenue generated by state-owned media organisations could “no longer sustain the payment of workers’ salaries and benefits,” highlighting the urgent need for the state government to intervene for their survival.
The strike action serves as a means for the affected workers to express their discontent with the situation and call for prompt resolution of their grievances.
