Opposition political parties in Nigeria have resolved to present a single presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
They also demand that the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, should not conduct the polls.
The resolutions were contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the Opposition Political Parties National Summit held on Saturday in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The communiqué states, “Participating parties agree to work towards producing one Presidential Candidate for the 2027 elections, which shall be agreed and supported by all participating opposition parties.”
They said the move was necessary to provide Nigerians with a united alternative ahead of the next general election.
The opposition parties also accused the INEC chairman of bias and partisanship in favour of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), insisting that he should not supervise the election.
“The INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, having shown bias and partisanship in favour of the ruling APC, should not conduct the 2027 general elections,” the communiqué stated.
They added that Nigerians had allegedly lost confidence in his ability to guarantee neutrality and credible elections.
The summit further declared that opposition parties would resist any attempt to turn Nigeria into a one-party state.
“That we shall resist all machinations by the APC to foist a one-party State on Nigeria and fight for the survival of multi-party democracy in our country”.
