Police, youths are friends, must work together — Lagos

The Lagos State Government has called on youths and members of the state command of the Nigeria Police Force to extend mutual respect to one another.
The Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mr Olusegun Dawodu stated this on Tuesday at the Second edition of the ‘Police Youth Dialogue’ organised by the Ministry Youth and Social Development at Abesan Youth Center, Ipaja.
He said, “The teeming youth population in the state must see policemen as their friends and accord them the necessary support and respect required for them to succeed in their constitutional responsibility of securing life and property of the citizenry.
“Also, je told the police to be civil while carrying out their lawful duties, saying Nigerian youths should be treated with respect and understanding.”
The Commisomnner stated further that it was the need to bring the law enforcement agents and youths together led to the formation of the programme  with the theme, “The Police, Youth and the Law: Strategic Collaboration for a Safer Lagos.
Dawodu sadded, “As a proactive government,the Sanwo-Olu led administration understands the indispensable role of youth in enhancing and sustaining the security of an important state like Lagos, hence the approval for the first ever Police Youth Dialogue was given in 2021 when the maiden edition was held.”
He added that the government would continue to design programme geared towards promoting youth inclusion in the development of the state and also build the capacity of young people in contributing to the state’s development.”
The Permanent Secretary, Mrs Toyin Oke-Osanyintolu, said this year’s Police-Youth Dialogue would cut across the five administrative divisions of Lagos State from Tuesday  January 10 to January 20, with facilitators speaking on various topics.
Similarly, the Lagos Police Public Relations Officer,Mr Benjamin Hundeyin, said the initiative would foster a harmonious relationship between the youth and the police.
Goodwill messages from the Senior Special Assistant on Youth Development to Mr Governor, Saheed Afonja, Chairman, National Youth Council of Nigeria (Lagos Chapter), Mr Lekan Oba, and Lagos State Youth Ambassador, Miss Zainab Aderounmu, urged the government to sustain the programme.
