Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, yesterday, flagged off a socio-economic intervention programme, tagged Eko Cares Initiative, aimed at addressing the economic challenges in the country.

The first phase of the programme has been designed to take care of over 500, 000 households as beneficiaries.

Beneficiaries of the scheme cut across the 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas, LCDAs of the state.

Speaking at the flag-off, Governor Sanwo-Olu warned representatives from the respective councils against hoarding of the items, saying his administration was determined to continuously make life easier and decent for the residents just as he urged residents to continue to give support to the present administration.

The governor told representatives of various communities present at the event to ensure even distribution of the food items to other less privileged people in their communities and avoid hoarding.

He noted that the objective of the programme was to ensure that food would not continue to be a challenge to residents.

While noting that the food items would be distributed through community leaders, religious organizations, trade unions, youth organizations and People with Disabilities clusters, and human rights groups, Sanwo-Olu urged stakeholders not to hoard it.

He also announced that the Ounje Eko market initiative will continue until further notice.

Earlier in his remarks, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Gbenga Omotoso, described the event as yet another milestone in the life of Sanwo-Olu’s administration in transforming lives.

Omotoso said: “This day marks the official unveiling of EKO CARES, a comprehensive response of the Lagos State government to the temporary hardship occasioned by the global economic crises.

“Since he assumed office in May 2019, Governor Sanwo-Olu has always demonstrated a penchant for keeping his word.”
