Students of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka on Thursday evening started a protest round the main campus over a proposed 100 per cent increase in school fees for the 2021/2022 academic session.

It was gathered that the university published a memo on Thursday specifying categories of fees to be paid by its students.

The memo indicated that fresh students across the faculties in the university are to pay a consolidated fee of N114,650 – N120,650, while older students are expected to pay between N85,000 – N95,000.

Before the new development, old students in the institution paid a fee of N40,000, and new students N83,000.

Some of the students who spoke on condition of anonymity said the proposed fees translated to 100 per cent increment.

One of the students going into third year said she paid N41,500 in the previous session and is expected to pay N82,000 in the new session that wili formally begin on Monday, December 5.

Despite the plea from the SUG, students still embarked on protest. They converged in front of different hostels and headed towards the Vice chancellor’s office.

The school has yet to react to the students’ protest against the new fees.
