Some gunmen on New Year Day attacked Yankwada, Babanduhu and other villages in the Shanono Local Government Area of Kano State, killing one person and rustling over 100 cows.

The terrorists who were said to have stormed the areas on 50 motorcycles, engaged the Nigerian military in a heavy gun battle until about 5am on Friday.

The Chairman of Shanono/Bagwai Community Security Forum, Alhaji Yahya Bagobiri, explained that the bandits came on a revenge mission after losing nine of their members last week to the military fire powers.

“The bandits came on over 50 motorcycles with three persons on each motorcycle. Bazookas and other heavy guns were used to raid Yankwada, Babanduhu and other villages. They started firing from around 1am Thursday to 5am Friday. One man was killed.

“The Bandits were dislodged by the military personnel who engaged them. However, they stole over 100 cows and killed one civilian,” Bagobiri said.

He called on the Federal Government to provide more arms and redeploy more personnel to complement those gallant officers on ground.

He noted that with more arms and the cooperation of the Nigeria Air Force, the bandits would be contained and area would have peace.

“The intentions of the bandits was to penetrate Kano, but the deployment of more military personnel and provision of more arms would stop their criminal missions”, Bagobiri added.

When contacted, the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations 3 Brigade Nigerian Army, Capt. Babatunde Zubairu confirmed the attack via a WhatsApp message.

“All the details are true except they didn’t kill anyone and there was no rustling of cows”, Zubairu said.
