Why police used teargas on OOU students — Ogun command

A large number of students at the Olabisi Onabanjo University were on Saturday bombarded with teargas by the Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command.
The students were reportedly protesting the alleged arrest of their colleagues in Oru-Ijebu, a nearby town to Ago Iwoye, where the university was located and where many students live.
The students were said to have stormed the Divisional Police Headquarters in the town, demanding that the police let the arrested students go.
However, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, clarified that no student was arrested by the police, adding that the students refused to listen to the reasonable explanation.
In a statement late on Saturday, the PPRO said, “The Ogun State Police Command reports that on Saturday, 28th March 2026, a group of students mobilised to Oru-Ijebu Police Division, claiming some of their colleagues were detained. The Divisional Police Officer, Oru Ijebu Division confirmed that no student was in his division’s custody.
“The students became agitated, breached the station gate, threw stones and bottles, threatening police personnel and property.
“Reinforcements were called and teargas was used to disperse the crowd. Normalcy has since been restored.
“The Command urges the public, especially students, to address grievances through lawful and peaceful channels, reaffirming its commitment to professionalism and public safety.”
No reactions has yet come from the university management or the student union government.
