No fewer than 11 person have died lone-vehicle crash on the Abeokuta–Lagos expressway after the vehicle somersaulted on Eruku Bridge in Ogun State.
The accident, which occurred on Sunday night, involved a gold Toyota vehicle with number plate, GGE722KJ, which was said to have lost control, somersaulted and plunged off the bridge with all occupants inside the car.
The Ogun Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, said emergency responders were immediately deployed to the scene.
According to him, the crash claimed the lives of all 11 occupants — 10 adult males and one adult female.
He said, “A gold Toyota with registration GGE722KJ somersaulted and fell off the bridge, trapping the occupants inside as the doors locked upon impact,” the FRSC statement read.
Ogunjobi explained that FRSC personnel, with support from members of the local community, had to dismantle parts of the vehicle to recover the bodies, which were later deposited at the State Specialist Hospital Morgue in Ifo.
Preliminary findings by the FRSC attributed the crash to reckless driving, as well as overloading and suspected driving under the influence.
The Sector Commander described the incident as avoidable and extended condolences to the families of the deceased.
He added, “Motorists using the Abeokuta–Lagos route must exercise caution, particularly when driving at night: They should also be careful of speeding and reckless driving.”
