The Federal Capital Territory High Court has adjourned till January 18, 2024, for the continuation of the trial in the alleged procurement fraud suit against a former Central Bank of Nigeria’s Governor, Godwin Emefiele.

Emefiele was accused of using his position to confer a corrupt advantage on Sa’adatu Yaro, a staff member of the CBN by awarding a contract for the procurement of 43 vehicles worth N1.2bn between 2018 and 2020.

Justice Hamza Muazu granted Emefiele bail in the sum of N300 million.

He was remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre.

However, reports said would remain in prison for failing to meet the N300 million bail set by the court.

Despite attempts by his legal team, the former CBN governor has not been released.

Emefiele’s extraordinarily strict bail requirements has proven to be a significant barrier to his release.

The decision to keep Emefiele incarcerated has sparked debate on the justice system’s impartiality as well as the seriousness of the accusations brought against him.

Emefiele’s supporters contend that the bail sum is excessive and could be an attempt to weaken his financial standing.

However, others opposed to Emefiele contend that the charges are severe enough to warrant punitive legal measures.

The severity of the charges against the Emefiele is demonstrated by the court’s decision to uphold the high bond requirement.
