Gunmen duel with policemen on stop-and search, three cops killed

Some gunmen have shot dead three policemen at the New Haven area in the Enugu State capital.

It was gathered that the incident happened on Wednesday around 10.30 pm in front of a popular supermarket at the Block bus stop.

Residents, who declined to disclose their identities said the gunmen believed to be armed robbers stormed the area and engaged the policemen, who were on stop-and-search duty, in a gun duel.

One of the said, “Three policemen were shot dead. The hoodlums also took away their guns.”

A security alert sent out by a resident read, “It happened at Block bus stop in front of … supermarket.

“Three policemen down already. We should avoid New Haven area for now.

“Two policemen are still lying lifeless on the road.”

The message was accompanied by a video which showed the dead policemen inside the gutter.

The state police command has yet to react to the incident.

Efforts to get the reaction of the state Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, were unsuccessful.
