Lagos opposes calls for exhumation of electrocuted Chrisland student

The office of the Lagos state attorney-general and commissioner for justice has opposed what it described as an ongoing dialogue to exhume the body of Chrisland School’s Whitney Adeniran.

Alo Grace, the office’s director of public affairs, issued a statement addressing the matter.

Whitney died on February 9 during a sports event hosted by Chrisland School in Agege Stadium, Lagos.

Blessing Adeniran, Whitney’s mother, had accused Chrisland of negligence that led to her death.

The school had dismissed insinuations that there was foul play in the case while citing that she slumped in public.

Chrisland also argued that Whitney complained about “not-too-buoyant health” a few days before she died.

The state government later revealed that an autopsy shows the schoolgirl died from asphyxia and electrocution.

In a statement, the office of the attorney-general said there is an ongoing dialogue to exhume the buried girl.

It said it is opposed to this as all conditions that would warrant the same do not apply in the late Whitney’s case.

“The Lagos State Ministry of Justice is aware of the current ongoing dialogue about the alleged plans to exhume the body of the late Whitney Omodesola Adeniran,” the statement reads in part.

“While we have not received any such official communication requesting for exhumation, however, if and when we do receive such a request, we shall be opposed to it.

“In any event, the circumstances for exhumation under the coroners’ systems law, 2015 do not arise in this case.

“It is not our intention to further traumatize the deceased’s family.

“We are working closely with the police who have given their reassurance that the duplicate case file would be forwarded on the 6th of March, 2023 to the DPP to aid the speedy issuance of legal advice.”
