New mum, nine-day-old baby die as water reservoir falls on building

Tragedy struck in the Ayedun Area of Akure, Ondo State, as a woman and her nine-day old were killed after a water reservoir fell on a building, on Wednesday.

The woman and her baby were said to be sleeping in a room in the collapsed building when the incident happened.

The baby was said to have been christened less than 24 hours earlier when the incident occurred.

A resident of the area, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the water that was full with water besides the building fell on it and killed the duo who was sleeping in the room.

He added that some other occupants of the building were also injured in the incident.

The resident said, “The water reservoir fell on the building, while the woman and her child were sleeping. Before the neighbours got to the scene and evacuated the victims, they had died.”

According to the resident, the victims were evacuated and deposited at a morgue of an undisclosed hospital in Akure.

The Police Public Relations Officers of the state command, Mrs Funmilayo Odunlami, confirmed the incident, saying investigation had commenced into the incident.

“We have commenced investigation into the matter,” the PPRO said.
